1:1 facial comparison

Load a known still and a questioned still. The engine detects the face, aligns it on five landmarks, and encodes an InsightFace ArcFace descriptor (512-d). That descriptor is the identity score. Craniofacial ratios and mesh shape are supporting evidence — they are not mixed in a way that can bury a true match.

Methodology

How OPS FaceMatch™ scores identity

This is a 1:1 investigative comparison. It does not search a gallery and does not identify a person. Two photographs go in; a structured readout comes out.

Identity signal (primary)

  • InsightFace ArcFace — MobileFaceNet trained on WebFace600K. This is a real face-recognition network used in production 1:1 verification.
  • Each face is aligned on five landmarks (eyes, nose, mouth corners) to a 112×112 template, then encoded to a 512-d L2-normalized vector.
  • A horizontal-flip pass is fused with the primary pass (test-time augmentation) before cosine similarity.
  • The on-screen index is a calibrated map of that cosine. Same-person pairs typically sit well above different-person pairs. It is still not a courtroom probability.

Supporting analysis (not mixed into identity)

  • 468-point mesh for photo-anthropometry (IPD-normalized eye, nose, mouth, jaw, craniofacial ratios).
  • Procrustes shape on orbital, nasal, oral, and mandibular subsets.
  • These used to be averaged into the main score. That buried true matches when pose, expression, or camera angle shifted 2D ratios. They are now displayed separately.

Aging

ArcFace is trained across adult age (AgeDB-class evaluation). It remains the identity signal when the photographs are years apart. If cosine is only moderate but age-stable craniofacial ratios agree, the report flags a pattern consistent with age progression — and also consistent with a close relative. That is investigative context, not an identification.

What this is not

  • Not probable cause, reasonable suspicion by itself, or a lineup.
  • Not robust to identical twins, some close relatives, masks, sunglasses, extreme pose, or very small/blurry faces.
  • Not a substitute for a trained facial examiner.

Privacy / access

Processing is in the investigator’s browser. Photographs are not sent to OPS servers. Case fields and photos stay in this browser until you click Reset. On the live domain, launch only from the OPS Field Kit (securefieldkit.opsconnectapp.com).
